New: Champagne Tarlant, champagne made of great wine

The Tarlant family is active in viticulture in Champagne since 1687, and in 1928 Louis Adrien Tarlant made the first bottle of Champagne Tarlant. The next generations expanded the vineyard, and today Jean-Mary Tarlant (°1951) and his wife Micheline are assisted by their son Benoît who is making efforts to understand even better the nature of the different parcels of the estate: thanks to the knowledge of the soils he tries to improve the composition of the different cuvées.
The vineyard of the Tarlants, on a surface of 13 ha in Oeuilly in the Marne Valley, is indeed composed of different parcels with very diverse subsoils; it is planted with the three typical grape varieties of Champagne: pinot noir (50%), chardonnay (30%) and pinot meunier (20%). In order to protect the vineyard and its ecosystem, methods that respect the environment are used, such as the application of organical fertilizers, controlled grassing down, limited yields, biological control, the protecting of useful predators, the use of the technique of sexual confusion in the combat against harmful insects. The careful handling of the vineyard results in harvesting sound grapes of very high quality.

The cuvées originating from the different parcels are vinified separately in order to obtain original champagnes plenty of character. All the wines are ripened during 6 months in oak barrels; a subtle "dosage" contributes to maintain their character.

.

The different cuvées :

  • Champagne Tarlant Brut Réserve : a blend of 1997, 1998 en 1999 made of  one third of each grape variety, from the different soils of the estate (chalk, " sparnacien " i. e. clay-chalk soil, sand). This is an equilibrated and harmonious blend of the elegance of the chardonnay, the bouquet of the pinot noir and the supple character of the pinot meunier : the ideal champagne for parties and celebrations.
  • Champagne Tarlant Brut Zéro : exactly the same blend as the Brut Réserve but without dosage (without added sugar). This pure and fresh champagne respects the complete expression of the grapes; it is a natural, sentimental and open champagne to appreciate as aperitif or with sushis or oysters.
  • Champagne Tarlant Brut Tradition : a blend of 1997 and 1998 with 50% pinot noir , 35% pinot meunier and 15% chardonnay, from the different soils of the estate (chalk, " sparnacien " i. e. clay-chalk soil, sand). This is a powerful champagne, plenty of character, with a perfect balance and a rich taste. The selection of the grapes, the predominance of the pinot grapes and the long ripening have generated a great, gastronomical champagne, perfect with meat, poultry and even goose liver (available in half bottles and in magnum).
  • Champagne Tarlant Blanc de Blancs : 100% chardonnay, a blend of 1997 and 1998, from a sandy and chalky soil. This is an elegant and fresh champagne with a subtle bouquet of white flowers and fruit, and a lively and honest taste with impressions of citrus fruit; ideal in the beginning of a meal or with crustaceans (lobsters or langoustines).
  • Champagne Tarlant Brut Rosé: a blend of 1999 and 2000 composed of 85% chardonnay and 15% pinot noir from chalky and sandy soils and " sparnacien ". This champagne has a beautiful colour of rose petals and a fine, expressive nose with aromas of spices, chestnut and strawberry; this generous rosé has a rich and fruity taste (red fruit, fig and plum). It is perfect with poultry and fruity deserts.

The exceptional quality of the Tarlant Champagnes is confirmed by the high scores and the enthusiast comments in the specialised press (Revue du Vin de France, Guide Hachette des Vins, Saveurs, The Times, Parker, Hugh Johnson and a lot of other reputed reviews).
